In an attempt to lure Amazon to relocate into their city, state representatives have given some bizarre bids for the past few months. Stonecrest, Georgia had offered to rename their city Amazon and Washington, DC. proposed to create Amazon University. Some bids from the top 20 shortlist for Amazon’s HQ2 seem harmless while Newark, New Jersey have been taking it seriously. Amazon is looking to invest more than $5 billion to create an 8-million-square-foot facility for their second headquarters. New Jersey is proposing a tax break of about $7 billion for Amazon if they choose Newark, making this the best bid for Amazon.
Before leaving the New Jersey office, Chris Christie and state legislative leaders announced that they would offer the tech-company a tax break of $7 billion for the next 10 years. “Today’s bipartisan action proves that nobody in any other state wants Amazon’s HQ2 more than New Jersey and the City of Newark, and there is nowhere better for this tremendously innovative job creator to grow and thrive,” Christie said.
Newark is in close proximity to New York City’s tech talent, allowing them to combine the two workforce for Amazon’s HQ2. Newark is offering the largest financial incentive package out of everyone on the top 20 shortlist. This deal may not be seen in the future anytime soon, so it is imperative that Amazon takes advantage of this opportunity. Newark is exemplifying full support for the giant e-commerce company. Possible sites to locate Amazon’s HQ2 are the potential 33 Washington Street, 520 Broad Street, 2 Gateway Center, Matrix Riverfront Plaza, Lotus Riverfront and Bears Stadium, and two more sites.
