Qualcomm unveiled its newest addition to the smartphone processor— the Snapdragon 888 Plus. The latest chipset is a supercharged version of Snapdragon 888 that arrived in the first half of this year. It’s used on the newest premium phones like the Asus ROG Phone 5 series and Samsung Galaxy S21.

CPU Clock Speed

Qualcomm gave Snapdragon 888 Plus an increased CPU clock speed from 2.84GHz to 3GHz. The increased rate will improve the user’s mobile experience during intensive tasks. AI Boost

Other than speed, Qualcomm also boosted the AI capabilities of the Snapdragon 888 Plus by 20%. This AI glow-up brings users a more immersive experience for entertainment, video calls, and even online classes.  

When is the Snapdragon 888 Plus Launch Date?

According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 888 Plus will be incorporated into devices starting this year’s third quarter. Meanwhile, device makers are developing more than 130 designs for the market using Snapdragon 888 and 888 Plus. 

Expect a more intelligent mobile experience as the AI enhances streaming, gameplay, photography, and more. According to Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm CEO, the Snapdragon 888 is designed for the optimum premium experience for Android device flagships.

Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G Phones

In the US, there are quite a few phones released this year without a 5G. The millimeter-wave version has come standard in devices like the iPhone 12 lineup.

Amon spent his MWC keynote talking about Qualcomm’s efforts in phishing 5G phones above and beyond. Currently, the company’s cellular tech is used in PCs, Smart Internet, and fixed wireless products. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is doing its best in executing the perfect opportunity for technology. 

5G Ran Platform

Along with the Snapdragon 888 plus release, Qualcomm also unveiled its second-generation “5G RAN platform” for small cells. Due to this, mmWave will expand to more places outdoors and indoors, even in new locations worldwide. 

Qualcomm will also introduce a lower band of 5G with “small cell densification” both in private and public networks. 

Its new 5G DU X100 Accelerator Card will allow operator and infrastructure vendors to take advantage of the following benefits:

  • High performance
  • 5G with power efficiency

More than 35 operators and device makers hopped in the mmWave support train. It’s an essential part of the whole 5G system. MmWave refers to higher frequency radio bands that range up to 24GHz-40GHz. In short, it’s what contributes to the fast performance and benefits of the whole system. 

However, although it provides a lightning-speed experience, it’s not entirely as reliable as the mid and low-band versions. For now, it can only travel within short distances. It can even be blocked by windows, trees, and other items. 

At the moment, mmWave’s biggest proponent has been Verizon. Other carriers are leaning more toward 5G’s slower but reliable versions. MmWave is only utilized in the densest part of the city or open areas like an empty stadium in the US. However, Qualcomm reassured that mmWave’s footprint would surely improve over time. 

5G mmWave Worldwide Use 

5G mmWave has been perceived by the majority as a US-centric technology. But if we closely look at the ones expressing support, it doesn’t paint a US-centric picture. The worldwide connectivity will be in Europe, China, Japan, North American, Korea, and Southeast Asia. China Unicom plans to use mmWave for Beijing’s 2022 Winter Olympics.

Meanwhile, Oppo plans to launch devices with 5G mmWave as soon as next year. For now, let’s sit back and wait if Qualcomm manages to fix mmWave inconveniences.
