Tech Founder and CEO says Zuckerberg’s “Metaverse” is Bad

The man behind Meta, formerly known as Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, focuses on its new product, “metaverse.” The product is called Horizon Workrooms. However, this new technology drew flak when Phil Libin tested his Oculus virtual reality on the metaverse.

While the pandemic continues to pressure companies and workers into remote work, big social networking tycoon Mark Zuckerberg also has something up his sleeve. Despite the pandemic lockdown restrictions, Zuckerberg wanted something that people can use to transport themselves to somewhere through virtual reality immediately.

The business magnate claims that this new technology can be big business as people have been dreaming of tech like this for so long. However, Phil Libin, founder, and CEO of the communication app Mmhmm, said otherwise.

Tech CEO disagrees with Zuckerberg’s take on the metaverse

Using his Oculus virtual reality gadget to try out Meta’s metaverse product, Libin confirmed that the idea was indeed bad and uncreative. He said that he had a strong feeling that it wasn’t the best technology as what Zuckerberg claimed to be. Keeping a very hopeful disposition that the metaverse is out of the ordinary, Libin hoped he would be “pleasantly surprised.”

Indeed, the CEO was surprised when using Meta’s Horizon Workrooms during a videoconference with his team at Mmhmm. The surprise seemed more of a disappointment, which validated his gut instinct that the product would suck.

Libin said, “It was only tolerable for a few minutes.”

While Zuckerberg views the metaverse product as something that could be revolutionary. Mmhmm founder says it’s an ancient idea that’s not as creative as other novelty tech innovations.

Libin says that using the metaverse for meetings is not as fun and enticing as using common apps like Zoom. He says that when using a virtual reality headset, people won’t be able to multi-task and do things like drinking coffee.

However, Zuckerberg says this can be the next big thing because it takes people to places. With new variants sprouting left and right, he claims there will be more lockdown restrictions. It makes the metaverse a perfect solution to connect. Not only that, people can go see places without even actually going. Through virtual reality, it will seem like you’re physically in the area.

What’s next?

Although one tech CEO had negative connotations about the metaverse, what’s next for Meta’s Horizon Workrooms?

Will this technology continue to thrive despite losing over $10 billion during its fourth quarter? In addition to that loss, the company’s user base also decreased significantly. Moreover, the Meta stock also dropped 26.4 percent on Thursday, eliminating almost $240 billion on the company’s value. This is considered the largest drop in one day in American corporate history.

Zuckerberg sees the metaverse as a valuable addition to the communication tools necessary to connect teams and workers. But Libin is unsatisfied saying, “It’s uncreative, it’s been tried many, many times over the past four decades and it’s never worked.”
