Oculus Quest 2 vs PlayStation VR: What to buy?

Two of the best VR headsets are competing for your attention, which do you go for? The Oculus Quest 2 (or Meta Quest 2) and PlayStation VR (or PSVR) share many outstanding features. Their prices are also almost similar, making it hard for people to choose, starting the Oculus Quest 2 vs PlayStation VR headset debate.

These two are regular placers on lists of the best headsets, thanks to their lower price. However, what makes these VR headsets great is that despite the lower price, they deliver high in quality. If you’re looking for VR headsets that are less expensive, these two are excellent options. Here’s a head-to-head review of Oculus Quest 2 vs PlayStation VR:

The Design

Aside from the charger, the Oculus Quest 2 is entirely wireless. Once you connect it to your WiFi, you’re ready for action. It has a design that allows you to download and play games even without the help of a PC or other similar devices. 

Its two Touch controllers are light and intuitive. As old-fashioned as it may seem, these run on AA batteries. But don’t despair, they can last for weeks or months, depending on usage, of course. Its downside would have to be its head strap which needs to be adjusted every time a new player uses it.

The PlayStation VR is the opposite, as there will be cables trailing you. You’ll need a PS4 and a PS4 camera, but despite this, it does more than the Oculus can. You can play traditional games using a virtual big screen and let you watch 3D Blu-rays while you’re at it. 

The Specs

The Quest gives you an 1832 x 1920 high-resolution image per eye, while PlayStation VR is pegged at 960 x 1080. This is a big deal as many players guarantee a noticeable difference. The only common denominator between these two is the 120 Hz refresh rates.

In terms of field of view, PSVR wins with 96 degrees over the Quest’s 89. However, the Quest has an advantage as its display is clearer and crisper than the PSVR.

The Cost

As mentioned above, these two headsets are similar in price. The Quest costs around $299, which is the same as PSVR, only if you already have a PS4 and PS5 and a TV set (move controllers not included). If you choose the pricier version of the Quest, you’ll be paying around $399 as it has 256 GB of storage instead of the 128 GB of the cheaper option. 

However, the PSVR may be the cheaper option in the long run. You can play physically available games, which means you can buy them at more affordable prices or buy them second-hand. Some PSVR games are also on sale at the PlayStation Store, something you can’t find on the Oculus/Meta store.

The Games

On both VR headsets, you can find many more popular games such as Beat Saber, Job Simulator, Vader Immortal, and many others. The Quest’s exclusive games include the VR adaptation of Resident Evil 4 and Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, to name a few.

On the other hand, PlayStation has a more impressive list of exclusives: Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, WipEout, Statik, Hitman 3, and Dreams, among many others.

The Verdict

If you want a wireless gaming experience, then the Oculus Quest is for you. If a better display is what you’re after, the Quest is still the better option. More so, if you don’t mind signing up with your Facebook account. 

Now, if you want better game choices, then the PSVR is what you need. That is, if cables all around you are not a deal-breaker.
