The new Google smart lamp is cool, but you probably can’t buy it

In the past years, Google has acquired almost every tech product out there. From phones and laptops to smart home tools like speakers and thermostats, it seems like Google has it all. This time, the California-based company is looking to break new ground with the Google smart lamp.

The tech company has recently released a lamp aptly called “dLight” – a play on the words “the light” and “delight.”

Based on the product’s initial photos and leaked features, Google smart lamp seems pretty promising for those looking for something to spruce up their desk. But unless you are employed at Google, then good luck getting your hands on the company’s newest employee-only product.

Introducing “dLight”

In a tweet, Ben Gold, a designer from the company, revealed the lamp design last February 11. In his caption, he cheekily added that the lamp “will likely never be for sale outside the company.”

The Google nest lights lamp features a modern design perfect for smart homes. Google smart lamp has a round base and a thin post that connects to an oval-shaped light.

According to Gold, users can move the pill-shaped light to different angles to use it to light their faces during video calls or focus on desk work. The pill-shaped light compartment can also be turned around and swiveled, so it can point straight at you or point down.

Apart from this, the lamp comes with lighting presets and can change the light’s temperature.

Federal Communications Commission documents say that the Google smart lamp supports internet connectivity. Not surprisingly, the light is also compatible with the Google Home app, which users can control through voice commands via Google Assistant.

Reports also say that the product qualifies for over-the-air updates. Furthermore, though not seen in the initial photos shown by Gold, the Google smart lamp has a USB-C port for charging.

From what spectators can see, a QR code is also present on the lamp’s base, which is most likely there for easy setup.

Google’s off-the-market products

While the lamp’s design and existence are not confidential, talking about it certainly builds hype. But this is not the first time Google has come up with an internal product. The company has a history of releasing products that it only intends to circulate internally.

In 2017, the tech giant created over-the-ear headphones for its employees. The noise-canceling headphones made waves for their design, built-in microphone, micro-USB charging, and traditional audio cable.

At first, speculators wondered about the nature of the product and why it existed. However, the news broke soon that it was only available for Googlers.

Is there any way to get your hands on this?

No, not really. Unless you get a job at Google overnight, that is. If you find the product interesting, just check out other lamps with the same features. After all, the company has said that it will be providing these lamps to employees to make working from home easier.

According to Gold, Google created the product to improve their employees’ work from home experience.

It is worth noting that Google’s employees are still not mandated to return to work. Because of this, it makes sense that the company would want to release its own sponsored lamp internally.

One lucky group of people can purchase the lamp for free, though. Google employees based in the US are fortunate enough to order the Google smart lamp once it is available. The product is currently on backorder.

Be that as it may, non-Google employees can only hope that if the company finds the lamp to be a lucrative product, it might consider releasing it to the public.
