Attention Night Owls: Fitbit’s Upgraded Sleep Profile Feature Is Here!

Fitbit wearables are among the most feature-packed fitness trackers on the market. It has been providing sleep tracking for more than a decade now. The Google-owned company introduced a premium sleep tracking feature called Fitbit Sleep Profile. Compared to one of the six animals, the new feature aims to improve your long-term sleeping habits by analyzing your sleep pattern and style.

Last week, Fitbit announced that it is part of the self-assessment features for premium users. The Fitbit Sleep Profile is the latest paywalled health insight Fitbit Premium users can use via the app. It will help them better understand their sleep type and identify their strengths and weaknesses.

How Does Fitbit Sleep Profile Work?

Based on a month’s worth of sleep data from around 60,000 Fitbit users, the company evaluated 1,000 unique sleep characteristics. The study resulted in ten metrics to determine a pattern. This is then compared to the usual data based on age and gender. Through this, you’ll know the areas of your sleep that need improvement. The tracked metrics include how consistently you go to bed – same time every day, disrupted sleep, sleep duration, restfulness, and REM sleep, to name a few.

Sleep Profile requires users to wear a compatible Fitbit device (Sense, Versa 2 or 3, Charge 5, Luxe, Inspire 2) for at least 14 days in a calendar month to receive a Sleep Profile report. The more you wear it to sleep, the more precise the health insight.

Again, the feature is exclusive to Fitbit Premium subscribers who pay $10 monthly for access to insights and a moderately sized library of fitness and mindfulness content, among other paywalled features.

Find Out What Animal You Sleep Like

Fitbit will assign a Sleep Animal based on your sleep analysis from the collected data. Six animal prototypes have been chosen based on their sleeping type, including Giraffe, Bear, Dolphin, Hedgehog, Parrot, and Tortoise. As your sleeping pattern and cycle change month-on-month, the sleeping animal assigned will also change accordingly.

Here are the six animals and your corresponding sleep characteristics:

  1. Giraffe – Your sleep tends to be shorter. Despite a shorter overall duration, you also have a relatively good proportion of deep and REM sleep.
  2. Bear – You tend to have a consistent sleep schedule. You go to bed earlier than most people, and you seem to reach a sound sleep quickly. In other words, your rest tends to be long and restful, with a relatively high proportion of deep and REM sleep.
  3. Dolphin – You tend to fall asleep later than most and sleep for less time overall. It might be because of an inconsistent sleep schedule. Unlike others, you tend to be a lighter sleeper and might take naps to catch up.
  4. Hedgehog – You usually fall asleep later and wake up earlier. You are a lighter sleeper. It usually takes longer to reach sound sleep and may get less deep and REM.
  5. Parrot – You’re likely to have a consistent bedtime and don’t doze too early or late. Typically, you get a good amount of sleep every night. You likely sleep soundly once you drift off, but you can be light on REM due to waking up for a short period during the night.
  6. Tortoise – You seem to fall asleep at different times each night, but usually earlier than others. Overall, you spend more time in bed, but the app may find it takes longer to reach a sound sleep, impacting lower than average deep and REM sleep.

Fitbit Sleep Profile is now available for Fitbit Premium subscribers who use the Sense, Versa 2/3, Charge 5, Luxe, or Inspire wearables.
