The pandemic has pushed companies and remote workers to communicate via messaging platforms. And one of the most widely used and reliable tools is Slack. But let’s admit, it can get a bit boring typing day in and day out to colleagues. Spice up your Slack experience by creating a custom Slack emoji that’ll make your colleagues either envious or impressed. 

Slack’s rising popularity

Slack has been the go-to platform for most companies and remote workers. Why? It’s simple. The platform is user-friendly that even your 60-year old grandpa can use it — with eyes closed. 

Moreover, Slack also has a clean user interface that easily and quickly lets you navigate the features. Once you log into your dashboard, you see the names and group threads on the left side panel and the chat boxes on the right. The field for typing is at the bottom, with the different buttons beside it if you want to add images, files, or emojis.

Slack’s 43-percent increase in revenue year on year is also proof of how its popularity is not stopping anytime soon. During the pandemic, people have been adopting more digital services due to social distancing restrictions, skyrocketing Slack’s sales within the last year. From March 2020 to April 2021, it garnered $902 million in revenues.

Custom Slack emoji

Slack has more than 2,000 emojis on its arsenal, enough to make colleagues and employees blast off emojis in one workday. But some employees might say, “Nah, I’d rather have custom Slack emojis.” And voila, Slack answered their prayers. 

Anyone can create a custom Slack emoji, save for Slack guests. If you have the Free, Standard, Enterprise Grid, or Plus plans, then you might as well join the bandwagon on custom Slack emojis! 

How to create a custom Slack emoji

While any Slack member can create a custom Slack emoji, not all workspaces will allow you to do this. Also, don’t get too excited about creating as many custom emojis on your phone as this process can only be done through your desktop or laptop. 

However, once the custom emoji is added, you can access this from your mobile phone. And this custom Slack emoji will also be available to everyone. 

Here’s how:

1. Open Slack and find your name on the left side panel

2. Click your name, and you should be welcomed with the message, “This is your space.”

3. Click on the Emoji button on the lower right corner

4. A bunch of emojis should appear. Click the Add Emoji button

5. Click the Upload Image button and choose a cool or funny image from your files.

6. Rename your custom Slack emoji

PRO TIP: Choose square images with transparent backgrounds and under 128KB. Also, to find your custom Slack emoji, it will be in between two colon punctuation marks. 

Where to find your custom Slack emoji

Once your custom Slack emoji is added to the platform, this will be available to everyone. To find custom emojis on Slack, click on the Emoji button, click the icon with the Slack logo, browse premade emojis from there. Or you can also type the name you set in between colons.

How to delete a custom emoji

If you took a really bad picture of you and added the emoji already, don’t fret. It’s not the end of the world. Just click the “X” and the emoji gets deleted. You can only delete your custom emoji though. However, if you feel there are inappropriate emojis, contact an administrator to delete them.
