AI Sommelier Succeeds in Writing Product Reviews About Wine and Beer

The best food product reviews will make your mouth salivate from how the writer describes the taste and texture and food. The same goes with drinks, especially wine. We all read about “notes of” or “grapes from” coming from food reviewers or sommeliers. But would an AI sommelier convince you to drink wine on how they describe it? Researchers used machine learning to create reviews about wine. Here’s how the researchers used AI to write those reviews.

The Study

In the International Journal of Research Marketing, Keith Carlson and co-writers have created an artificial intelligence software that could write reviews about wine and beer. They aim to help wine and beer producers collect reviews about their beverages. At the same time, they hope their AI sommelier software can help actual human writers produce better reviews through a template. They could further expand their software to create reviews on coffee and cars.

What Made The Researchers Choose Beer and Wine?

Carlson, a co-developer and engineer of the AI software, said that in describing wine, there’s a limited vocabulary needed. Another thing they considered was the specifics about wine, such as production, grapes, and country of origin.

How Did The AI Sommelier Create The Reviews?

First, they collected reviews from the Wine Enthusiast Magazine. There were 120,000+ reviews from the site. Meanwhile, for beer, they used the RateBeer website. They gathered around 140,000+ reviews from the site. This helped the algorithm analyze how to write a review about beers and wines. But the creators inputted details, such as:

  • Name of brewery and winery
  • Style
  • Alcohol percentage
  • Price

Once the AI knew about these details, it eventually found the commonly used adjectives to create descriptions of a beverage.

The researchers then performed a Turing test to see which reviews sounded convincingly human to humans. Basically, Carlson et al. had people read one human and an AI review from 300 types of wines. In addition, they also had ten human-written reviews and one AI-written one for the 60+ beers. Carlson was surprised by the results. The humans couldn’t tell whether humans or AI wrote the reviews.

Limitations

As with any study, the researchers were faced with limitations. Praveen Kopalle, a co-author and marketing specialist, said it only understands binary and that the AI cannot taste the wine. Plus, if a review lacks specific taste descriptors, it might not get an accurate picture or taste for the review.

In addition, the researchers believe that their software may not be used only for review-related purposes.

Ben Zhao, an expert in machine learning and cybersecurity at the University of Chicago, said that business owners could take advantage of this software and destroy competitors. Despite that, Carlson and Kopalle still see that business owners may potentially use it for good. And it could be beneficial to those who don’t have time to write product descriptions.

AI Writing

AI writing is not a nascent concept. In fact, some businesses use AI writers to produce their content and copy. Basically, a marketer or team member of your business will choose the content or copy type they need. Then, they include keywords, which will be the basis of the whole content or copy. The AI writer generates different options (for a copy) or content for a blog. Then, the marketer can edit whatever the AI writer generated, and it’s ready for publishing.

But which ones are the best? Here’s a list of that many businesses trust:

  • Rytr
  • Ai Writer
  • Writesonic
  • Frase
  • Jasper
  • Long Shot
  • Hyperwrite

Of course, use AI writing software with caution. Even if they’re impressive, human writers still have an advantage in using the company’s voice, empathy, and creativity. Although AI writers can finish your blog posts or copy in an instant, human blog writers can attract your audience better with persuasive and emotional content or copy.
