Long Covid: Definition, Symptoms, Risks, and Recovery

As we brace ourselves for possibly new COVID-19 variants, a new risk is threatening humans once again. Experts are calling this long covid. But what is long covid?

It is a condition that people get after contracting the COVID-19 virus. The symptoms typically last for weeks or even months once you have the virus in your system. Although there are no official statements or medical diagnoses for long covid, people should still watch out for symptoms.

Technically, this is known as the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 or PASC. This is also known as the long-term covid, long-haul covid, post-covid syndrome, or post-covid conditions in laymen’s terms. 

Experts still haven’t figured out a precise term for long covid, and there is also no thorough comprehension of what it is on a chemical level. However, experts say that it shouldn’t be taken lightly as patients can still suffer symptoms after contracting the virus. Bruce Levy, Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s chief of the pulmonary division, said some people who contracted the disease might feel normal during infection and feel long covid symptoms afterward. 

What are the symptoms of long covid?

Long covid symptoms can last for four weeks, and infected patients could experience far severe symptoms. Others also say that symptoms can occur at least 12 weeks before someone is diagnosed with the condition. 

These symptoms may affect people’s everyday functions and tend to fluctuate or relapse. However, the most prominent sign is fatigue. Patients can feel tired after doing simple tasks such as quick walks around the block. 

Another symptom is brain fog, where patients experience cognitive and memory difficulties. Patients may also experience shortness of breath, gastrointestinal issues, heart-related problems, or lingering cough. 

How do experts diagnose long covid?

As of now, experts claim there is still no test or lab that can diagnose it. The only test patients can go through is the ordinary RT-PCR or anti-gen test. Once they test positive for coronavirus, it’s recommended to monitor the lingering aftereffects of the virus. It’s best to watch out for symptoms that linger for up to four weeks or more. 

What are the risks?

Most people with comorbidities are at risk of getting coronavirus and the same goes for experiencing post-covid symptoms. 

However, that doesn’t mean younger and healthier people should act recklessly. Primary care provider and instructor at George Washington University’s medicine division Daniel Karel said that even young people with no underlying medical issues are also at risk and experience life-threatening symptoms. 

Some factors should also be considered such as the amount of viral RNA produced during the initial coronavirus infection, the presence of Epstein-Barr virus in the blood, or the presence of antibodies that attack tissues. 

Also, experts claim that women might be more prone to symptoms than men. Moreover, adolescents and children may also develop it. However, this may be less common. 

How to recover?

As of now, there is still no recognized treatment for long covid. But experts suggest that low-paced gradual increases in activities are recommended for recovery. It may take time to recover from symptoms and patients may experience post-exertional malaise, an indication of fatigue. 

Cedars-Sinai’s director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging Susan Cheng said that if patients experience it, they shouldn’t try to push through the illness. Instead, they can rest and let their immune systems recover. Better yet, talk to a medical care provider in case you feel the symptoms are lingering as early as three weeks after your initial infection.

They are harmful to wildlife, marine ecosystems, natural resources, and even toddlers. Balloons filled with helium look so pretty in the sky. However, they can’t stay afloat for so long. Each of these balloons pops and plunges to the earth, turning into trash. This is why balloon releases should be banned. 

How the Tradition of Balloon Releases Harms the Environment

Releasing balloons has become a customary practice in local events, including schools, weddings, and memorials, with origin tracing back to the 1940s. We acknowledge the emotional significance of traditions, like those we’ve seen in sporting events with fireworks, marching bands, and cool mascots. In May 2019, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) continued its tradition of releasing balloons before the start of the Indianapolis 500. The IMS claims that its balloons are biodegradable. However, studies conducted to test these claims still raise a big question and pose a substantial environmental risk. 

Then, in 2022, the IMS management confirmed that the pre-race “Balloon Launch” has been paused indefinitely. 

Regardless of what the Indy 500 does, several people and organizations still do balloon releases. Here are some reasons they harm the environment and potential alternatives to flying balloons.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) emphasizes that wildlife can confuse a balloon’s small, bright pieces as food. The agency points out that the balloons released into the air don’t merely go away. They either get stuck on something like electrical wires or tree branches. Others may deflate and plummet into the ground, where they can create many problems. 

Balloons that are not disposed of properly end up in the ocean and along the shores, and worse, they can be mistaken for food by wildlife and marine animals. Strings or ribbons attached to the balloon, on the other hand, can cause entanglement and other injuries. 

Another major problem is marine debris.

Experts are also worried about balloons becoming marine debris. Solid waste, found in global water bodies and the accumulation of such waste along waterway shorelines, is termed marine debris. Marine debris is frequently cited as one of the most widespread issues in global marine pollution.

3. Use cold water. Using cold water can as much as 80% of the energy needed to wash your clothes. Opt for a low setting on the washing machine to help save water.

4. Switch to electronic billing. Paper products comprise the most significant percentage of local solid waste in the United States, and printed bills alone generate almost 2 million tons of CO2. So, save paper by switching to electronic billing (e-billing).

5. Buy local produce. In North America, for example, fruits and vegetables travel 1,500 miles, on average, before reaching your plate. Buy fresh, local food to avoid long distances traveled and preserve nutrients and flavor.

6. Recycle. You can recycle plastic bottles, paper, electronics, batteries, etc. Practice proper disposal and learn how to recycle such products.
